Picking the best hiking trails near me can be very difficult when you live far away from them. Luckily, I have a map of my hiking trails and can tell which ones are best to do depending on the season or the time of the year. So, here is the shortlist of what I consider to be the best hiking trails near me:

East Ledge National Park: Northeast of Philadelphia PA is the quiet town of East Ledge, New Jersey. A former mining town, most people are still employed at mining companies. The closest major city is Bethlehem, PA and it is only about a couple hours drive away. There are dozens of hiking trails through these scenic woods. The closest hiking trail to me was about six hours away from my house so that really made a difference in my hiking plans.

Hiking Transylvania National Park: This trail is in the heart of Transylvania National Park. It goes through rolling hills and beautiful wooded valleys. The park headquarters is actually located near Plank Road, which is in another gorgeous wooded valley. This trail is not monitored so you may want to bring a hiking partner or a cell phone with you to signal your progress.

Sentier National Trail: This is the longest trail on the entire U.S. national trails system. It is also very tough and requires at least a packraft. This route also goes through a lot of forests. I usually carry a map of my hiking areas so that I can mark the direction to get to a place that I am not familiar with.

Adirondack Chair Trail: This trail is also in the Adirondack National Park. It goes through a forested area that is actually a mountain. It has an awesome view of the mountains surrounding me. On each side of the trail, there are small parking lots for hikers to use. There are many times where I see dozens of people hiking near me and they all stop to take pictures of this scenery.

Cabin River Trail: This trail was the first one I hiked when I got out of the big cities. I knew it was going to be a tough hike but I figured I could manage since I was only carrying a small backpack. The path is in a forested area so it is definitely a challenge. However, there are signs nearby that indicate which direction you should head in to reach the cabin and the overlook.

East Bay Trail: This trail is in the middle of the national park. It also goes through a forest. There is a parking lot that provides lots of shade during the hot afternoon. I love these hiking trails because there are so many beautiful views from here. The trail also goes through the undulating terrain of San Francisco Bay. There is a restaurant at the end of the trail that serves lunch and dinner.
